An Air India plane bound for London crashed in a locality near Ahmedabad airport Thursday afternoon soon after taking off.

A video has surfaced showing the exact moment Air India’s AI171 flight plummeted into a residential area near Ahmedabad airport shortly after takeoff, triggering a massive explosion and fireball.

The chilling footage, now circulating widely on social media, shows the Boeing 787 aircraft losing altitude quickly in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. Within seconds, the plane disappears from the frame, followed by a blast and a towering inferno.

Flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 pm IST. Just moments later, the aircraft issued a "Mayday" distress call before vanishing from radar at 13:38:51 IST, according to flight tracking service Flightradar24.

Air India confirmed the involvement of flight AI171 in a brief statement: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) identified the aircraft as a Boeing 787, registered VT-ANB. It was carrying 242 people, 230 passengers and 12 crew members, including Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a veteran with over 8,200 hours of flight experience, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 hours.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 80 personnel from Gandhinagar, and a green corridor is being established to facilitate rapid medical evacuation of survivors.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles as emergency teams battled the blaze and began extracting passengers from the wreckage. Casualty figures are not yet confirmed, and rescue operations continue amid chaotic scenes.
