The project, involving the installation of more than 700 BESS containers, will be commissioned by March 2026, the company said in a statement.

It will be India’s largest BESS installation and one of the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployments.

The project, located within the Khavda renewable energy park, the world’s biggest such facility, will use advanced lithium-ion battery technology and energy management systems to enhance grid reliability and efficiency.

Battery storage is required to make renewable energy more reliable, provide backup power, and improve grid stability. It allows energy generated from sources like solar and wind to be stored and then used when the source is unavailable, such as at night or during low-wind periods.

Adani said the storage system will help manage peak load demand, reduce transmission congestion, and prevent solar energy curtailment, strengthening India’s energy security and enabling round-the-clock clean power supply.

“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future. With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group. “This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.”

The company said the Khavda BESS deployment would play a key role in decarbonising the power sector, supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Khavda as the world’s largest renewable energy and storage park.

The conglomerate outlined an ambitious plan to expand its energy storage capacity to 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by March 2027 and 50 GWh over the next five years.

"The project is in the advanced stages of deployment at Khavda, the world's largest renewable energy plant. The project is being developed with cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology and is being integrated with advanced energy management systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability," it said.

"The deployment will support peak load management and energy shifting, thereby playing a critical role in decarbonising the power sector."

The Adani Group, headquartered in Ahmedabad, operates diversified businesses across energy, logistics, metals, and consumer sectors, and has pledged to align its growth with India's net-zero and sustainability goals.
