IIT Delhi has been recognised as the top university in India, followed closely by IIT Bombay, according to the latest QS World University Rankings for Asia. IIT Delhi secured 44th place, up from 46th last year, while IIT Bombay ranked 48th.

With an impressive academic reputation of 95% and an employer reputation of 99%, IIT Delhi secured an overall score of 75.4. Ranked second in India and 48th in Asia, IIT Bombay boasted an academic reputation of 96.6% and an employer reputation of 99.5%, with an overall score of 73.1.

IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay were the only two Indian institutes to feature in the Asian top 50.

The country dominated the list of top ten universities in Southern Asia as seven Indian institutes made the ranking. Overall, India saw the highest number of institutions ranked in the QS list this year.

Five Indian institutes made it into the top 100, including IIT Madras (56th), IIT Kharagpur (60th), IIT Kanpur (67th), and the University of Delhi (81st).

The top 150 included universities such as IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Chandigarh University, UPES and Vellore Institute of Technology.

The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) made significant strides, jumping 70 places to reach the 148th rank this year.

With 46 institutions in the 2025 QS World University Ranking, in contrast to just 11 in 2015, India witnessed a 318% growth among G20 countries in a decade.

“This growth underscores India’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and enhancing global competitiveness,” a government release said.

Spotlighting the top universities across the continent, the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025 assessed 984 institutions across 25 countries in Eastern, Southern, South-Eastern and Central Asia.
