SUMMARY

The income tax department is unlikely to extend the ITR filing deadline again. In May, the due date was extended to September 15 from July 31 due to major revisions in ITR forms, system development needs and TDS credit reflections.

CBDT due date extension, income tax deadline news

The IT department has been urging individuals not to wait longer and file their ITR as soon as possible.

In May this year, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the deadline for income tax return (ITR) filing to September 15 from July 31 due to several changes in the ITR forms for the assessment year 2025-26 (AY26).

While announcing the due date extension on May 27, CBDT said, “The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in exercise of its powers under Section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 ('the Act'), extends the due date of furnishing of Return of Income under sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act for the Assessment Year 2025-26 in the case of assessees referred in clause (c) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act, which is 3 pt July, 2025 to 15th September, 2025.”

The IT department, in May, further said that the extension will provide more time due to major revisions in ITR forms, system development needs and TDS credit reflections.

“This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone. Formal notification will follow,” the Income Tax department said in a social media post on X.

Will the deadline be extended again?

While many taxpayers and professionals have requested the IT department to extend the deadline to September 30 for non-audit purposes, the deadline is not likely to be extended further.

In fact, the IT department has been urging individuals not to wait longer and file their ITR as soon as possible.

“Don’t delay, File TODAY! Honest filing is the best Insurance Policy! File before 15th September 2025,” it said on X on September 13.

It is advised that taxpayers file their ITRs within the next two days and not wait for another deadline extension. Missing the due date can attract many penalties and charges, and you can also lose out on refunds and other benefits. Even if your income is below ₹12 lakh, you should file ITR as it acts as an income proof and can be essential when applying for loans, credit cards and a visa.
