With the September 15 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) fast approaching, many taxpayers are still hoping for a last-minute extension. However, as of now, there has been no official announcement from the Income Tax Department regarding any further extension of the due date.
Despite growing calls from tax professionals and industry bodies citing system glitches, delayed form utilities, and errors in Form 26AS and AIS, the department has continued to encourage taxpayers to file without delay. In a recent tweet, the Income Tax Department reminded users: "File Early, Stay Stress-Free! Why wait till the last day? File your Income Tax Return early to ensure peace of mind before deadline. File your ITR today at: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in

Meanwhile several tax professionals have publicly voiced their concerns:

CA Bimal Jain highlighted that the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has sought an extension due to ongoing issues with Form 26AS, AIS mismatches, and system errors.

CA Himanshu appealed directly to the Income Tax Department on social media, stating that delayed utilities and constant updates are causing "errors, crashes, and delays," making compliance difficult.

CA MD Akil emphasised that portal glitches and extensive data requirements are affecting audit efficiency, urging the department to consider extending both ITR and tax audit deadlines.

Taxpayer Dhruv Patel pointed out issues with ITR Form-2, where even when positive values are entered for LTCG and STCG, the tax calculated remains zero — a clear sign of portal errors.

ITR due date extension 2025

For FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26), the deadline for individuals not subject to audit has already been pushed from July 31st to September 15, 2025.

With barely three weeks left, all eyes are now on whether the government will extend the deadline. The government has granted ITR due date extensions in previous years due to exceptional circumstances. But taxpayers should not wait for the last minute, and instead gather their documents, reconcile their Form 26AS and AIS data, and file through the official income tax e-filing portal.
