Yes, children, including your son or daughter, can apply for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) card, though it isn’t compulsory for every minor. PAN is primarily used for financial and tax purposes in India, and there is no minimum age restriction. Minors under 18 can obtain a PAN, usually through an application submitted by a parent or legal guardian.

How is a minor’s PAN card different from a regular one?

The format of a minor’s PAN card is largely similar to a regular PAN card, but there are notable distinctions:

A minor’s PAN card does not display the child’s photograph or signature.

The proof of address provided during the application belongs to the parent or guardian.

However, proof of identity and date of birth must be specific to the child.

When does a minor need a PAN card?

Although not mandatory in all cases, a PAN card for a minor becomes necessary in certain situations:
Investments: If you plan to invest in stocks, mutual funds, or bonds on behalf of your child, a PAN card is required with the guardian listed.
Banking: For accounts with higher deposits or transactions, a PAN card helps comply with banking regulations.
Nominee or asset ownership: If your child is the nominee for insurance policies, property, or other assets, having a PAN simplifies procedures.
Income reporting: Earnings from talent, art, or investments are typically added to a parent’s taxable income, requiring a PAN card for filing returns.

Documents needed to apply for a minor PAN card

To apply for a minor PAN online, you will need:
Proof of identity and date of birth of the minor: This can be a birth certificate or an Aadhaar card.
Proof of identity and address of the guardian: Documents such as the parent’s Aadhaar, Voter ID, or passport.
Photographs: A recent passport-sized photo of the minor is submitted, though it does not appear on the card.

New rule regarding birth certificates

According to the draft Income-tax Rules 2026, children born on or after October 1, 2023, must provide a birth certificate as proof of date of birth when applying for a PAN. Acceptable certificates include those issued by:

  • The municipal authority

  • Any office authorised by the Registrar of Births and Deaths

  • The Indian Consulate under the Citizenship Act, 1955

What happens after a minor turns 18?

The PAN number itself remains valid for life. However, once the individual becomes an adult, the card should be updated to include their photograph and signature. The 10-digit PAN number does not change, only the card details need updating.

While a PAN card for a minor is not always required, it can be extremely useful for banking, investments, and income-related matters. Obtaining one early can simplify financial activities in the future.
