ITR-5 Excel Utility is available now for return filing; what's the status of ITR-6, ITR-7?

The Income Tax Department has released the first version of the Utility Excel-Based tool for ITR-5. The new version, Utility Excel-Based (Version 1.0), was made available on Friday, August 8.

"The release of ITR-5 Excel Utility for AY 2025–26 is a significant step towards the partnership firms, LLPs and co-operative societies to commence their return filing journey using new reporting features. Taxpayers falling into these categories can download and use the utilities from the official e-filing portal," said CA Gaurav Singh Parmar, Associate Director, Fincorpit Consulting.

Who Should File ITR-5?

The ITR-5 form is intended for the following entities:

  • Firms

  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)

  • Associations of Persons (AOPs)

  • Bodies of Individuals (BOIs)

  • Artificial Juridical Persons (AJPs)

  • Estates of deceased persons

  • Estates of insolvent persons

  • Business trusts

  • Investment funds

Who should not file ITR-5?

The ITR-5 form is not applicable to:

  • Individuals

  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)

  • Companies

  • Entities required to file returns under ITR-7

  • Entities filing under sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C), or 139(4D) of the Income-tax Act, 1961

Status of other ITR forms

ITR-6: This form is for companies, with the exception of those claiming an exemption under Section 11.
ITR-7: It is to be filed by individuals and companies who are required to furnish returns under specific sections of the Income-tax Act, such as those related to trusts, political parties, and educational or medical institutions.

"The status of ITR-6 and ITR-7 utilities is pending as on August 11, 2025. That delay has built some suspense and narrowed compliance dates for companies and trusts using these forms," noted CA Gaurav Singh Parmar.

"Unless the Central Board of Direct Taxes officially extends the dates, I feel that no further postponement of due dates for filing are likely before release of these utilities Taxpayers are advised to keep a close watch on the official updates for any change in deadlines or procedures," he added.

Key changes to ITR-5 form for FY 2024-25

Capital Gains: The Schedule-Capital Gain has been updated to require taxpayers to separately report capital gains for transactions before and after July 23, 2024. This change is in line with the Finance Act, 2024.
Capital Losses from Share Buybacks: Taxpayers can now report capital losses from share buybacks. This is only permitted if the related dividend income is declared under "income from other sources," specifically for transactions that occurred after October 1, 2024.

ITR filing 2025 deadline

The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) has been extended for certain categories of taxpayers.

  • For individuals and HUFs not requiring an audit: The deadline is September 15, 2025.

  • For businesses requiring an audit: The deadline is October 31, 2025.

  • For businesses with international transactions or specific domestic transactions: The deadline is November 30, 2025.
