ITR processing time delayed, refunds not issued despite early filing: Latest issues raised by users

As the extended Income Tax Return (ITR) due date on September 15 approaches, the Income Tax Department's X handle is being flooded with taxpayers' complaints around delays in processing of returns and pending refunds despite early filing.

Over the last few days, several users have claimed that their income tax returns have not been processed even thought they filed very early. Many others have reported similar delays in their income tax refund

Why are ITR processing and refunds delayed? How is the Tax Department responding?

In most of the queries posted by users on X, the Income Tax department's social media handle has responded by forwarding complaints to the concerned teams. In many instances, they have replied directly to users on X.

Return processing and the issue of refunds can be delayed for various reasons, including incorrect filing or in cases where the income tax department needs more time to assess various entries, including deduction claims, in the ITR form. Are all income tax return process and refund cases delayed or pending?

No. Many taxpayers have reported receiving ITR processing and refunds within a few days.

For instance, X user @ CAChirag said, "I received my income tax refund credit within seven days. This year's refund process seems faster than last year."

Another user @bithika11 said, "Wow, that's efficient! I received an email informing me that I have an income tax refund. The very next morning, SBI sends a mail that the refund has been credited to my account. Quite impressive. Must give credit where it's due. Well done @IncomeTaxIndia."
