For the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), just 15 days left for the income tax return (ITR) due date filing. As the September 15 deadline is knocking at the door, taxpayers should not wait any further and finish filing their income tax return (ITR) at the earliest.

For those who have filed and are waiting for the refund, the tax department has been actively working towards the efficiency of ITR processing and refund issuance. However, delays can still happen.

Here are five queries and their answers regarding ITR status and refund delays

1) What is the usual ITR processing and refund timeline after e-filing?
Refund processing by the tax department starts only after the return is e-verified by the taxpayer.

Usually, it takes 4-5 weeks for the refund to be credited to the account of the taxpayer.

2)When will I receive my income tax refund after filing ITR?
As per the income tax department website, taxpayers get the refund amount in 4-5 weeks.
3) How can I check my ITR status and refund status in 2025?
You can easily check the status of your ITR and refund through the income tax e-filing website.

⦁ Log in to the income tax e-filing portal with your account using PAN/Aadhaar number and password.

⦁ Navigate to the "e-File" tab.

⦁ Select "Income Tax Returns."

⦁ Click on "View Filed Returns."

⦁ Click on "View Details" for the relevant assessment year to see the current status of your ITR.

⦁ The status will show if it's "Processed," "Refund Issued," or "Refund Failure."

4) What are the common reasons for a delay in my ITR refund?
The refund process only begins after you have e-verified your ITR. Several factors can cause a delay in your refund. The most common reasons include:   ⦁ The refund can fail if your bank account details are incorrect.

⦁ Your bank account is not pre-validated.

⦁ The IFSC code of the bank is invalid.

⦁ The name on the bank account doesn't match your PAN details.

⦁ A mismatch between the income, TDS, and other details you reported in your ITR and the data available in your Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS).

⦁ If you have any pending tax demands from previous years, the department may adjust your refund against those dues.

5) What should I do if my refund status shows "Refund Failure"?
If your refund has failed, you need to take the following steps to get the refund re-issued:

⦁ Log in to the e-filing portal.

⦁ Check the reason for the failure under the "View Filed Returns" section.

⦁ Go to "Services" and select "Refund Reissue Request."

⦁ Submit the request.

Several users have claimed that their income tax returns have not been processed despite being early filers. Many others have reported similar delays in their income tax refund. The tax department's X handle is being flooded with such complaints from taxpayers.
