Ahead of the September 15 deadline for ITR filing for AY 2025-26, the 'Extend Due Date Immediately' campaign on X by tax professionals continues to gain momentum.

Apart from the ITR due date extension, tax professionals, including chartered accountants, are also seeking an extension of the due date of the tax audit.

At the time of writing on September 9, 2025, there were around 12,500 posts with #Extend_Due_Date_Immediately. There were also thousands of posts with #extend_ITR_TAR_duedates.

The last date to file ITR for AY 2025-26 without paying a penalty in non-audit cases is September 15, 2025.

Why are tax professionals demanding an extension of the due date?

Tax professionals have been citing multiple reasons behind their demand to immediately extend the due date. Some of the common reasons shared by them are below:

  • Delay in release of various ITR filing utilities
  • Massive workload cause by delay in utilities
  • More time taken for ITR filing because of additional information asked in ITR for AY 2025-26.

Apart from the above, some tax professionals are also saying that filing too many ITRs may lead to errors and complications later.

Gaurav Singh Parmar, Associate Director, Fincorpit Consulting, had earlier told us that the burden of compliance increases year by year. Almost 8 crore returns are anticipated this season, of which almost 1 crore are audit or complex reporting cases.
CA Siddharth Maurya had said that sheer workload pressure is the main reason behind the demand for due date and tax audit date extension
In an article yesterday, we shared some of the issues raised by tax professionals, including the BJPCA Cell, Pune.

What is the response of the Income Tax Department?

The Income Tax Department has not yet responded to the demand for an immediate due date and tax audit date extension.

The Department has urged taxpayers to file their returns as early as possible to avoid the last-minute rush.

What should taxpayers do?

As there is no clarity yet on further due date extension, taxpayers should try to file or get their returns filed as early as possible. While doing so, they should ensure there is no error, as it may lead to income tax notices later.

How many taxpayers are yet to file returns?

A comparison of the number of income tax returns filed this year with the previous year's data before the due date shows that around 2.5 crore taxpayers are yet to file their returns for AY 2025-26. while only 7 days are left before the end of the due date.

Last year, around 7.5 crore returns were filed. The due date has been extended this year to September 15. However, till September 7, only around 5 crore ITRs were filed.
