Quant Mutual Fund has become the first AMC in India to launch investment products under SEBI’s newly created Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) category. The AMC has introduced two innovative strategies named qsif Equity Long-Short Fund and qsif Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund which makes it the first mover in this fresh segment of the mutual fund industry.

Both schemes aim to provide long-term capital appreciation by investing in equities while also deploying short positions through derivatives to manage volatility and enhance returns.

What is SIF?

A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is a type of mutual fund, but made for more unique, complex, or niche strategies. It can invest in things that regular funds usually don’t — like long-short strategies, derivatives, structured debt, etc.

1)Category: It's an open-ended Specialized Investment Fund (SIF), a new category in India that's more flexible than traditional mutual funds but more regulated than Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs).
2)Investment Objective: To generate long-term capital appreciation by investing in equities outside the top 100 companies by market capitalization. The fund will use a long-short strategy to enhance returns and manage risk. This involves both buying stocks (long) and using derivatives to bet against stocks (short).
3)Investment Universe: The fund will focus on companies outside the top 100 by market capitalization, with up to 35% of its assets able to be invested in the top 100.
4)Benchmark: Its performance will be benchmarked against the NIFTY 500 Total Return Index (TRI).
5)Minimum Investment: The minimum investment is high, at ₹10,00,000 for both the NFO and continuous basis. Accredited investors have a lower minimum of ₹1,00,000.
6)Load Structure: There is a 1% exit load if you redeem or switch out units within 15 days of allotment. After 15 days, there is no exit load.
7)NAV Disclosure: The Net Asset Value (NAV) will be calculated and disclosed on all business days before 11:00 p.m.
8)Redemption: Under normal circumstances, redemption proceeds are dispatched within 3 working days of a valid request.
9)Plans and Options: The fund offers a Direct Plan (for direct investors) and a Regular Plan (for those investing through a distributor). Both plans have Growth and Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal (IDCW) options.
10)Stock Lending: The fund can lend stocks, but this is limited to no more than 20% of its net assets in total and no more than 5% to any single intermediary.

Some other fund houses such as Edelweiss Mutual Fund, Mirae Asset Mutual Fund, SBI Mutual Fund, ITI Mutual Fund, DSP Mutual Fund are yet to announce their SIF investment products.
