The growing trend of remote work has given birth to a new tribe of laptop-wielding digital nomads, or globally mobile remote workers.
According to Knight Frank's The Wealth Report 2025, this growing tribe of digital nomads is transforming the world's most beautiful cities, resulting in many countries such as Portugal, Spain, and Thailand tightening the policies for digital nomads. Many other countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Denmark, have implemented regulations to limit foreign property ownership.
However, the governments across the world are unlikely to make the rules so tight that it meaningfully "curtails the travel of remote workers."

Among other countries, Croatia has introduced a Digital Nomad Residence Permit for stays up to a year and it is targeting non-EU citizens. Spain is offering a Digital Nomad Visa under the Start-up Law, which allows stays up to five years with tax benefits.
Mexico offers a Temporary Resident Visa to remote workers, which is valid for one year, and can be extended with proof of sufficient income or savings. South Korea has announced plans for a Workation Visa (F-1-D) to facilitate remote work.
Mauritius is proiding a Premium Visa to remote workers, allowing stays up to one year, renewable, with proof of sufficient income. Cape Verde is offering a Remote Working Program for six months, which is extendable, with proof of income and health insurance.
