SUMMARY

The Income Tax department has awarded the contract for the PAN 2.0 project to LTIMindtree, and it is expected to become operational in the next 1.5 years. The project aims to make the permanent account number (PAN) a 'common business identifier' for all digital systems of government agencies.

The Income Tax department has awarded the PAN 2.0 project to the tech consulting and digital solutions company LTIMindtree, a PTI report said, quoting official sources on Monday, August 4, 2025.

The project will be completed within the next 1.5 years, the report added. The final bid value of the company was settled at over ₹792 crore, as per the documents, the report said.

PAN 2.0 project

The project for the updated version of PAN was announced by the central government last year with an outlay of ₹1,435 crore. It is an initiative by the Income Tax Department to modernise the PAN system.

PAN 2.0 is aimed at simplifying the PAN/TAN processes and providing improved services to the public with faster service delivery and an enhanced grievance redressal mechanism.

The project will leverage the latest technologies to transform PAN services, handling all matters related to PAN and TAN comprehensively.

It will deal with all the issues, including allotment, updates/corrections, Aadhaar-PAN linking, re-issuance requests, and online PAN validation, acting as a one-stop platform.

PAN 2.0 benefits

The updated PAN cards under the PAN 2.0 project will have a dynamic QR code, which will display the latest data present in the PAN database.

“The PAN cards issued since 2017, as well as the PAN cards that will be issued under the PAN 2.0 project, have a QR code. However, under the PAN 2.0 project, the QR code will have further enhancements (a dynamic QR code that will display the latest data present in the PAN database). The existing PAN cards will continue to be valid under PAN 2.0, and there is no requirement for existing PAN holders to obtain a new PAN card,” Minister of State (Finance) Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply in Lok Sabha on July 29.

With QR-enabled PAN cards, the Permanent Account Number (PAN) will become a 'common business identifier' for all digital systems of government agencies.

The PAN cards under the PAN 2.0 project will offer several benefits, including security, efficiency, consistency and a unified portal for all PAN-related services.

Notably, the existing PAN holders will not be required to apply for a new PAN. However, PAN cardholders with old PAN cards without QR codes can request a new one to avail of the enhanced features under the new system.
