The government on Tuesday extended the deadline to switch from the National Pension System (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) till November 30. The earlier deadline to switch from NPS to UPS for eligible employees, past retirees, and spouses of deceased retirees to opt into was scheduled to expire on September 30.

“Requests have been received from various stakeholders that some more time need to be given to employees to exercise the option in view of these changes,” the Ministry explained, referring to the recent enhancements to the UPS. These updates included options for switching between plans, new benefits in the case of resignation or compulsory retirement, and tax exemptions.

In response to continued feedback, the Ministry of Finance has decided to grant an additional two-month extension, moving the new deadline to 30th November 2025. The Ministry has requested that the PFRDA take the necessary steps to implement these changes, including updating the CRA systems and issuing an official circular.

"It has been decided to extend the cut-off date to exercise choice for UPS by two months i.e., up to 30th November 2025 for eligible existing employees, past retirees, and legally wedded spouses of the deceased past retirees," the letter states.

Government grants second deadline extension for Unified Pension scheme option

This marks the second time the deadline has been extended by the central government. Initially, individuals eligible under the scheme were required to make their choice by 30th June 2025, following its official rollout on 1st April 2025.

However, considering the demand for additional time, the Ministry of Finance issued an order on 1st July 2025, pushing the deadline to 30th September 2025.

Employees are allowed a one-time option to shift from the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) to the National Pension System (NPS). However, once this choice is made, they cannot return to UPS. To exercise this option, employees must do so at least one year before their scheduled retirement, or three months prior in the case of voluntary retirement or VRS. If no choice is made within these timeframes, the employee will automatically remain under the UPS.
