The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for activating Universal Account Number (UAN) and linking Aadhaar with bank accounts under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme to February 15.
While the original deadline was November 30, it has been extended multiple times. The deadline was first extended to December 15, then to January 15, and has now been extended once again.
UAN is a 12-digit identifier used for handling the provident fund accounts. It is a centralised tool for individuals to track their EPF funds and access them. UAN activation is the process of activating the universal account number in order to avail of several services provided by the EPFO. These services include:
Withdraw EPF funds online.
Check EPF balance.
Update contact details.
Moreover, linking Aadhaar is essential for EPF money to be directly transferred to the linked bank accounts. Simply put, for individuals to access EPFO’s online services like direct benefit transfer (DBT), among many others, UAN activation and Aadhaar seeding must be done.
The ELI scheme is aimed at creating two crore jobs in India in the next two years, boosting employment in the country’s formal sector. The central government launched three schemes under the Employment Linked Incentive during the Union Budget 2024 announcements as a part of PM Modi’s combination of five schemes for job creation and skill development. These schemes come with an outlay of ₹2 crore and are expected to provide benefits to over four crore youth. As per the recent notification from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, all eligible employees must complete UAN activation and Aadhaar linking to receive the benefits under the scheme.
New EPF members can do their UAN activation online through the EPFO Member Sewa portal by following these steps:
