How much profit will investors get?

The RBI has set the price for final redemption of SGB 2017-18 Series 9 at ₹12,484 per unit.

In a release dated November 26, the central bank said,"the redemption price of SGB shall be based on the simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity of the previous three business days from the date of redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA). Accordingly, the redemption price for final redemption due on November 27, 2025, shall be ₹12,484/- (Rupees Twelve Thousand Four Hundred and Eighty Four only) per unit of SGB based on the simple average of closing price of gold for the three business days i.e., November 24, 2025, November 25, 2025, and November 26, 2025."

In 2017, this SGB series was offered to investors at ₹2,964 per gram (1 unit = 1 gram). Further, there was also a discount of ₹50 on online investment in this SGB series in 2017. So, investors who invested in this SGB series online in 2017 paid  ₹2,914 per gram.

The absolute return is ₹12,484 minus ₹2,964, equaling ₹9,520 (excluding interest). This represents a return of 321%, calculated as (9,520 ÷ 2,964) × 100.

The absolute return for those who bought this SGB series online in 2017 amounts to ₹12,484 minus ₹2,14, which equals ₹9,570 (excluding interest). This represents a return of 328%, calculated as (9,570 ÷ 2,914) × 100.

The calculation shows that investors who purchased the SGB 2017-18 Series 9 online in 2017 will book a 328% profit on redemption, while offline investors will book a 321% profit on final redemption.

The Government is not currently issuing new SGBs. However, the RBI is facilitating the redemption of existing SGB units once they reach their maturity or pre-mature redemption dates.
