SUMMARY

India Post (Department of Posts) has merged Registered Post with Speed Post to enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays and offer better connectivity across the network, the Ministry of Communications said on Wednesday, August 6.

The integration is aimed at rationalising and modernising India Post services and aligning them with evolving market demands.

Many reports have recently suggested that the Department of Posts is planning to end the Registered Post service from September 2025. However, Registered Post is not ending; its sorting infrastructure and processing are being integrated with Speed Post.

The registered post facility would be available through Speed Post as ‘add-ons’. Let’s look into this and learn what will happen after Speed Post integration.

The Department of Posts, or India Post, has rationalised its sorting infrastructure and merged the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items to enhance delivery timelines and streamline mail operations, the Ministry of Communications said on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

“In order to streamline mail operations, improve delivery timelines, and optimize logistics resources, the Department of Posts has rationalized its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network,” the ministry stated.

How is Registered Post different from Speed Post?

Until now, Registered Post was addressee-specific and Speed Post was address-specific, which means that items sent through Registered Post could only be delivered to the person named on the envelope, while Speed Post items could be delivered to anyone at the address (like a family member).

Basically, in a Registered Post, the identity of the recipient and proof of receipt are legally necessary. On the other hand, Speed Post is more about faster and reliable delivery with modern tracking features. Registered Post is often used for legal or official documents, like court notices or government letters, due to its secure nature.

While Registered Post is slower, it provides high security and accountability, as under this service, the India Post offers a receipt for the sender, as proof of mailing, and the delivery can only be made to the addressee. It is suitable when proof of delivery is legally required.

What will change now?

After the integration, items will only be delivered by Speed Post, and items booked as ‘Speed Post with registration’ will be delivered specifically to the addressee. This means that individuals can choose registration while sending items through Speed Post, ensuring safety and accountability.

“Following the integration, Speed Post Letter and Speed Post Parcel will provide address-specific delivery, while items booked as Speed Post with registration will be delivered specifically to the addressee,” the ministry said.

Further, benefits under Registered Post won’t end, as customers can enjoy all the features of registration under Speed Post, along with availing of premium Speed Post features.

“This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network,” the ministry said.

The following Speed Features will now be available to all customers:

  • End-to-end online tracking
  • Real-time delivery updates
  • OTP-based secure delivery
  • Cash on Delivery (COD) services
  • Credit facility
  • Applicable volume-based discount
  • National Account Facility for corporate customers

This step is being taken to rationalise and modernise India Post services and align them with evolving market demands and customer expectations.

Now, customers can send items through Speed Post, which will be delivered faster (1-3 days, as compared to 3-7 days taken by Registered Post), and access full online tracking.

For security purposes, they can choose registration with Speed Post and avail of the benefits that were offered by India Post with Registered Post. This integration will make the mail operations faster and technologically sound.
