These dates may, however, change in case of unscheduled holidays, so careful planning is recommended for those considering early redemption.

"It may, however, be noted that the above-mentioned dates may undergo a change in case of unscheduled holiday/s. Investors are advised to take note of the period for submission of requests for redemption of SGB, in case they choose to redeem their holdings before maturity," the central bank said.

SGB tax update explained

Although the Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) have a maturity period of eight years, the scheme allowed investors to redeem them prematurely anytime after completing five years from the date of issue. Both redemption on maturity and early redemption after five years were tax-free under the existing rules.

However, the Union Budget 2026 has proposed changes to the taxation of SGBs. Under the proposed amendment, capital gains arising after April 1, 2026, will be tax-free only for investors who purchased the bonds through the initial subscription and held them until maturity.

It is important to note that this amendment will take effect from April 1, 2026, and not immediately after the budget announcement.
