The small savings schemes offered by the India Post are government-backed savings instruments that are widely used by people across the country. These schemes encourage a savings culture and promote financial inclusion in India.

Post Office also provides Railway Tickets at the doorstep. Railway Reservation Tickets of all classes can be booked at select Post Offices across the country.

“To provide Railway tickets through convenient locations, Railway reservation tickets for all classes are being sold at selected Post Offices in association with the Ministry of Railways (MOR),” according to India Post’s official website.

The service is available in areas where there are no Rail Head/Railway counters. It is currently available at 333 Post Offices across India, especially in rural and semi-rural areas, enhancing accessibility.

How to book railway tickets at post offices?

One can book railway tickets at selected post offices that have been equipped with Passenger Reservation System (PRS) terminals.

To book a railway ticket, you can visit a designated post office, fill out the necessary form and make the payment. Here are the detailed steps:

  • Find a participating post office that has a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter. These are usually located in rural and semi-rural areas that lack a railway station or counter. You can find locations here
  • At the counter, provide your details and travel information to the person at the counter, including your origin and destination stations, date of travel, train preference and ticket class you wish to book.

  • Fill out the relevant reservation form and make the payment.

New railways rule

From October 1, a new rule came into effect, under which you will not be able to book general reserved railway tickets on the IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and app in the first 15 minutes of the reservation window if you are not an Aadhaar authenticated user.

This decision was taken to ensure that the benefits of the ticket reservation system are not misused. Now, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book tickets in the first 15 minutes of the opening of the general reservation window.

The general reservation window opens 60 days before the departure date of the train.

Note: There is no change in the 10-minute restriction period, during which authorised Indian Railways ticketing agents cannot book opening day reserved tickets.
