The minimum fare for a black-and-yellow taxi for the first 1.5 km will increase to ₹33 from ₹31, while the minimum auto-rickshaw fare will rise to ₹27 from ₹ 26.

For longer journeys, the per-kilometre taxi fare has been revised to ₹21.90 from ₹20.66, while the auto-rickshaw fare will increase to ₹18.22 per km from ₹ 17.14.

How much more will you pay?

For short-distance commuters, the immediate increase is relatively small, ₹2 more for the minimum taxi fare and ₹1 more for the minimum auto fare.

However, the impact can add up for people who use taxis or autos regularly.

For example, assuming a commuter takes two minimum-fare auto rides every working day for 22 days a month, the fare increase of ₹1 per ride would add about ₹44 to the monthly commute bill.

For two minimum-fare taxi rides a day over 22 working days, the ₹2 increase per ride would translate into an additional ₹88 a month.

The actual increase will depend on the distance travelled and the number of rides taken.

When will the new fares apply?

The revised fares will come into effect from September 1, but drivers can charge the new rates only after recalibrating their electronic fare meters.

The RTO has given taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers until the end of November to complete the recalibration. Drivers who fail to do so may face penalties, an RTO official told PTI.

Why have Mumbai taxi and auto fares increased?

The MMRTA, chaired by the Maharashtra transport secretary, approved the fare revision based on the formula recommended by the four-member Khatua panel, which is used for revising fares of black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws in Maharashtra.

The latest revision comes after a gap of 18 months. The previous fare increase of Rs 3 each for taxis and auto-rickshaws in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region came into effect on February 1, 2025.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has more than 4.5 lakh auto-rickshaws and over 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis, with most of these vehicles running on CNG.

What does this mean for your budget?

While the fare increase may appear modest on a per-ride basis, frequent commuters could see their monthly transportation costs rise. For households already managing higher living and commuting expenses, even small increases can add up over time.

If you regularly use Mumbai taxis or autos, consider factoring the higher fares into your monthly transportation budget from September.
