Yes, the formation of the 8th Pay Commission or the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) has been approved by the Government.

The Central Government decided to set up the 8th Pay Commission way back in January 2025. However, the approval to set up the new pay panel doesn't automatically mean the 8th CPC has been implemented as well.

There is a difference between the approval and implementation of the 8th CPC. Let's understand:

What is the 8th CPC approval?

The 8th CPC approval means the Government has approved setting up the 8th Pay Commission. This approval came in January, but the Government is yet to put the 8th CPC to work.

The approval to set up the 8th Pay Commission was given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told a press briefing in January.

Even Prime Minister Modi had posted about the approval on X, saying, the Cabinet's decision on the 8th Pay Commission will "improve quality of life and give a boost to consumption."

What is the 8th CPC implementation?
8th CPC implementation means the implementation of the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. This has not yet happened. And it may take another 1-2 years to implement the 8th CPC recommendations.

Currently, the Government is in the process of setting up the 8th CPC. This involves selecting candidates for the post of the chairperson, members, and clerical staff of the new pay panel.

Further, it also involves finalising the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the new pay commission, which will serve as a guide with essential tasks on which the 8th CPC will work. Once everything is put in place, the Government will formally notify the 8th Pay Commission in the central gazette, following which the 8th CPC will begin its work.

Recently, the Government informed the Parliament that the notification, terms of reference, and other decisions related to the 8th Pay Commission will be taken in due course.

As part of its work, the 8th CPC will engage with various stakeholders, including representatives of employees and pensioners, and various Central Government departments and ministries. It will study their current salary structures, pay-related pain points and various demands.

All of this may take several months. In the past, pay commissions have taken 1.5-2 years before submitting its recommendations to the Government.
