The permissible limits will vary by train classes, as per the TOI report.

Indian railway stations are gearing up to get an airport-like feel: The Indian Railways is set to introduce strict luggage regulations for passengers, similar to airports. According to a report by the Times of India, weight limits for baggage will be introduced, and passengers will be required to pass their luggage through electronic weighing machines at key railway stations.

Those who carry bags beyond the allowed weight limit, or even excessively bulky luggage, will have to pay extra charges or penalties, the report added. The Indian Railways is also launching premium single-brand outlets at redeveloped stations.

These outlets will offer clothing, footwear, electronics, travel gear, etc., expected to enhance convenience and boost railway revenue, the report said, citing an official.

The permissible limits will vary by train classes: AC First Class passengers will be allowed up to 70 kg, AC Two Tier up to 50 kg, while AC Three Tier and Sleeper will have a limit of up to 40 kg, the report stated. Additionally, general class passengers will be allowed to carry up to 35 kg. Oversized bags will attract penalties, even if they’re under the specified weight limits.

The initial rollout will be at key stations in the NCR zone, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah.

Redevelopment of Prayagraj Junction

The Prayagraj Junction railway station is undergoing a major redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, with an outlay of ₹960 crore.

The project is aimed at transforming the station into a model rail hub, featuring a nine-storey structure equipped with world-class amenities, along with features like spacious waiting lounges, high-speed Wi-Fi, solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, automated ticket vending machines and digital information displays.

Starting December 2026, only passengers with a valid train ticket will be allowed entry into the terminal area, and the ticket will function like a boarding pass, similar to air travel. Further, non-travellers will need a platform ticket, which will act as a visitor pass, the report said.

The government has not confirmed these changes officially, and this is as per media reports. Please check back for more details.
