Registering on the e-filing portal is a simple and secure process that can be done in just a few minutes.

Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is mandatory for individuals having income below the basic exemption limit. This year, the due date for filing an ITR without penalty has been extended to September 15, from the usual July 31, due to various changes in the ITR forms.
To file an ITR, taxpayers have to register on the e-filing portal (www.incometax.giv.in). Whether you are a salaried individual or a business owner, creating an account on the portal is essential for filing an ITR, checking refund status, and accessing other tax-related services.

If you’re a first-time taxpayer, here are the things you need to know for registering on the e-filing portal.

Documents required for registration

Before registering on the e-filing portal, make sure you have:
  • A valid PAN (Permanent Account Number)
  • An active mobile number linked to your PAN (for OTP verification)
  • A working email ID
  • Your details (date of birth, address, etc.)

Registration process

Step 1: Go to the official Income Tax e-filing website: https://www.incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Click on register
Step 3: Select ‘Register as a Taxpayer’ and enter your PAN.
Step 4: Click on validate to proceed
Step 5: Fill in the mandatory details such as full name, date of birth (for individuals) or incorporation date (for businesses) and residential status. Click on continue.
Step 6: Enter your active mobile number, email address and postal address.
Step 7: Verify both the OTPs sent to your mobile number and email address.
Step 8: Review the entered details and click confirm to proceed.
Step 9: Set password and security message. Click on register to complete the process.

After registration, you can log in to file your ITR. You can also do a lot of other things, such as check your tax refund status, view Form 26AS (tax credit statement), and respond to income tax notices.

Troubleshooting and support

In case your PAN is already registered but you have forgotten your password, you can reset it by using the ‘Forgot Password’ option on the website. For technical issues, visit the ‘Help’ section on the portal or contact the Income Tax Department’s help desk.

Filing an ITR is not only necessary for paying your tax liability, but it is also crucial for loan approvals, income proof, visa processing, income tax refund claims, and more.

Registering on the e-filing portal is a simple and secure process that can be done in just a few minutes. By following the abovementioned steps, first-time taxpayers can easily create an account and comply with tax obligations.
