For transactions in the education category, the 1% charge would only be applicable on transactions done through third-party apps.

HDFC Bank has revised its credit card charges with effect from July 1, 2025. The bank has announced monthly usage thresholds in some categories, including wallet loading and utility transactions. Let’s look at the charges:

Gaming transactions

Starting from July 1, cardholders will not receive any reward points for online skill-based gaming transactions. This means that transactions made on platforms like Dream11, Rummy Culture, Junglee Games and MPL will not receive any reward points.

Further, if any user spends over ₹10,000 a month on these platforms, a 1% charge will be applicable. The maximum amount that can be charged is capped at ₹4,999 in a month. When the monthly threshold of ₹10,000 is exceeded, the charge (1%) will be applied to the entire spending for the month.

Wallet loading

A 1% charge would be applicable if cardholders load third-party wallets (like Amazon Wallet) for a total amount of over ₹10,000 in a month. These wallet platforms include Paytm and Mobikwik. This charge is also capped at ₹4,999 per month, and if the monthly threshold exceeds, the charge will be applied to the entire amount for the category.

Utility transactions

If the total amount on utility bills crosses ₹50,000 in a month, a 1% charge will be applicable. Utility payments include prepaid and postpaid transactions for electricity, mobile bills, DTH, etc. The charge is capped at ₹4,999 and after the monthly threshold is exceeded, the charge would be applicable to the entire amount for the category.

Note: Insurance premium payment transactions will not be considered utility transactions, so the 1% charge would not be applicable to it.

Insurance transactions

HDFC Bank has also introduced a revised limit on the maximum reward points that can be earned on insurance transactions. Currently, the bank has a daily limit of 5,000 reward points that can be earned per day using the Infinia and Infinia Metal credit cards. This limit has now been changed to 10,000 reward points in a month.

For Diners Black, Diners Black Metal, H.O.G Diners Club, and Biz Black Metal credit cards offered by the HDFC Bank, the current limit is 5,000 reward points per day. This has also been changed to 5,000 points per month.

The limit has also been changed for the other HDFC Bank credit cards. The bank currently offers 2,000 points per day, and will now offer 2,000 points per month starting from July 1.

Maximum charges

For transactions in categories including rent, fuel and education, a 1% charge is currently applicable. Effective July 1, the charge is capped at ₹4,999 for the specified categories.

In rent, a 1% charge would be applied on all transactions, irrespective of the amount. For fuel transactions, the 1% charge would be applicable when the cumulative amount exceeds ₹15,000. Further, if the amount exceeds ₹15,000, the charge would be applicable to the entire transaction amount.

In education, the 1% charge would only be applicable on transactions done through third-party apps. These applications include platforms like Cred, Nobroker, etc.

Note: If the transaction is done on the school/college website/POS machine, no charge would be applicable. International education transactions will also not be charged.

These changes affect HDFC cardholders, especially the ones who make big transactions from their cards in the above-mentioned categories. However, if you spend reasonably from your card and stay below the thresholds, these charges will not be applicable to you. Moreover, if you make education-related transactions directly from the institution’s website, you can prevent the charge. HDFC Bank credit cardholders must be aware of these charges so they can manage their spending accordingly.
