GPF interest rate for October-December 2026

According to the Finance Ministry resolution, accumulations at the credit of subscribers to the General Provident Fund and other similar funds will earn interest at the rate of 7.1% per annum for the October-December 2026 quarter.

The rate is effective from October 1, 2026, and will remain applicable until December 31, 2026.

The government notified the rate under its October 5 resolution issued by the Department of Economic Affairs.

Which provident funds will earn 7.1% interest?

The 7.1% interest rate applies to the following funds covered by the government resolution:

  • General Provident Fund (Central Services)

  • Contributory Provident Fund (India)

  • All India Services Provident Fund

  • State Railway Provident Fund

  • General Provident Fund (Defence Services)

  • Indian Ordnance Department Provident Fund

  • Indian Ordnance Factories Workmen's Provident Fund

  • Indian Naval Dockyard Workmen's Provident Fund

  • Defence Services Officers Provident Fund

  • Armed Forces Personnel Provident Fund

What does the 7.1% GPF rate mean for government employees?

For employees covered by GPF, the 7.1% rate determines the interest credited on eligible accumulations in their provident fund accounts for the October-December quarter.

GPF is a long-term savings mechanism for eligible government employees. Contributions are accumulated in the subscriber's account and earn interest at the rate notified by the government for the relevant period.

The latest decision therefore means that eligible subscribers will continue to receive interest at 7.1% for the current quarter.

GPF vs EPF

GPF and the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) are different retirement savings mechanisms.

GPF is applicable to eligible government employees under the relevant government provident fund rules, while EPF primarily covers eligible employees in the organised private sector and other establishments covered by the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act.

Therefore, the 7.1% GPF rate announced by the Finance Ministry should not be confused with the EPF interest rate.
