Forgot income tax e-filing portal login password? Check how to file ITR with net banking

Several major banks including HDFC Bank and SBI offer an option on their website through which you can easily file your ITR.

Tax filing season has arrived, and taxpayers have started filing their returns for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). For this year, the IT department has extended the ITR filing deadline to September 15, 2025, from the original July 31.

Usually, the IT department releases the ITR forms early, and the ITR filing starts on April 1. This year, the release of the forms was delayed as they were notified by the end of April.

Taxpayers file their ITR online on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department. If you have forgotten your tax e-filing portal login credentials, can you still file ITR?

Filing ITR with net banking

Most banks offer an option to file income tax returns through their website by logging into net banking. For instance, ICICI Bank has a page detailing how to file ITR with their net banking.

If you have forgotten your e-filing portal password, you can log in to your bank’s net banking and access it from there.

ITR filing with ICICI Bank:
Step 1: Log in to internet banking with your ID and password
Step 2: Go to payments and transfers
Step 3: Go to manage your taxes
Step 4: Select Income Tax e-Filing.
You will be redirected to the income tax website, https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in, and can use the services available without logging into the IT portal. These services include quick e-File ITR, Upload Return, View Form 26AS, View Form 26AS, Tax Calculator, Download ITR and E-Pay Tax.

For this, you wouldn’t need your IT portal user ID and password. However, you may need to verify your mobile number and email ID with one-time passwords. (OTPs) registered on the income tax website.

Many other banks, including HDFC Bank and SBI, have similar options on their website through which you can easily file your ITR.

As ITR filing for the current assessment year has started, ensure you check all the changes in the ITR forms and file the correct one before the deadline to avoid any penalties.
