On a year-on-year basis, the net payroll additions recorded a 1.17% increase over April 2024, indicating growing employment opportunities and greater awareness of social security benefits among the workforce, the ministry said in a statement.

Of the total additions in April, around 8.49 lakh were new subscribers, up 12.49% from March 2025.

The highest contribution came from the 18-25 age group, which accounted for 4.89 lakh new subscribers or 57.67% of the total new enrolments.

The net payroll addition in the 18-25 age group stood at around 7.58 lakh in April, registering a 13.60% rise from March 2025.

"This is in consonance with the earlier trend which indicates that most individuals joining the organized workforce are youth, primarily first-time job seekers," the statement noted.

Around 15.77 lakh members, who had exited EPFO coverage earlier, rejoined it in April, recording a 19.19% month-on-month rise and an 8.56% increase compared to April last year.

"These members switched their jobs and re-joined the establishments covered under the ambit of EPFO and opted to transfer their accumulations instead of applying for final settlement thus safeguarding long-term financial well-being and extending their social security protection," the ministry said.

Around 2.45 lakhs new female subscribers joined EPFO in April 2025, a 17.63 % increase from March 2025.

The net female payroll addition rose sharply by 35.24% to 3.95 lakh during the same period.

A state-wise analysis revealed that Maharashtra led the payroll additions with a 21.12% share, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, each contributing over 5% to the total net additions.

The top five states and union territories together accounted for 60.10% of the total net payroll.

The data also highlighted that about 43.69% of the net additions came from expert services, out of which manpower suppliers constitute around 50%.

Since April 2018, the EPFO has been releasing monthly payroll data covering the period from September 2017 onwards. The net payroll figures include new enrolments, exits, and re-joinings validated through Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Numbers (UANs).
