EPF name correction: Steps to make correction in UAN profile and list of documents required

Most salaried employees with incomes of more than ₹15,000 are part of the social security organisation Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). However, if an incorrect name is submitted or mistakenly entered, it can create several issues, such as rejection of PF withdrawal claims and problems in seeding Aadhaar with UAN.

The EPFO members should note that it is possible to change name online. In a post on X, EPFO asked users to "first determine whether the error is minor or major".

EPF name correction: What are considered as minor changes

• If up to two alphabets get changed and the name does not change phonetically
• Adding surname in case of female after wedding
• Removing salutations like Shri, Mr, Mrs, Dr, miss etc

EPF name change: What are considered as major changes

• If over two alphabets are changed and the name gets changed phonetically
• If less than two alphabets change but the name changes phonetically
• Expanding the name

At least two documents from the list below are required to make minor changes in name. In case of major changes, at least three documents are needed.

Incorrect UAN name: Documents required

• Aadhaar (Mandatory)
• Birth certificate
• Passport
• Death certificate
• ID issued by Central or state government, PSU and banks
• Bank passbook with name and photograph
• PAN Card
• Ration/PDS photo card
• Pensioner/Freedom fighter photo id
• Voter ID
• CGHS/ECHS/Medi-claim card with photo issued by government, PSUs or Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana Card
• SC/ST/OMC certificate with photo
• For full or first name change requests, PF members must submit a Gazette notification of their new name and supporting documents of their old name with a photograph
• In the case of foreign nationals, a valid visa with a passport
• Copy of Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card
• Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card
• Tibetan Refugee card

How to request EPF name correction

• Login on member UAN portal- https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
• Go to 'Modify Basic Details' under 'Manage' section
• Provide correct details as per Aadhaar and submit documents
• Click on update details and a request will be sent to the employer for approval
• After the employer's approval, the request will be sent to the EPFO office for further approval.
