The festive period this year extends from October 18 to October 29, leading to increased demand for flights. This period is particularly challenging for salaried individuals who live away from their hometowns and are forced to pay exorbitant prices for flight tickets to visit their families.

On average, flight fares increase by over 80% for one-way flights and round-trip flights during the festive season. Airfares have already increased by over ₹2,000 for the busiest air routes, and are expected to rise further as Diwali approaches.

DGCA directions

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to keep Diwali season airfares reasonable, while also ensuring that they increase capacity by adding more flights to meet demand.

Civil aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu, on Friday, October 10, directed airlines to maintain reasonable prices on their flight tickets during the upcoming festive season.

Naidu held a review meeting with officials from major airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, etc., to discuss operational and technical performance, passenger grievances and security incidents, as per a release by PTI.

The civil aviation ministry has upgraded its AirSewa portal to curb the price surge, allowing passengers to register complaints related to high airfares.

“Airlines assured that passenger convenience will remain their top priority and informed that additional flight capacities have been deployed on high-traffic routes to meet festive demand,” the release said.

Recently, Air India has launched a limited-time offer in collaboration with the HDFC Bank, providing instant discounts on both domestic and international flight bookings made through the Air India website or the mobile app. The offer is available only on tickets booked between October 1 and October 18. Read more about it here.

Many airlines are expected to introduce similar offers and are adding extra flights to prevent steep price hikes to provide some ease to customers during the festive season.
