The appointments for the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) are taking longer than usual. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has once again extended the last date of application to fill up four posts of Under Secretary (Level 11) in the 8th CPC on a deputation basis to June 30, 2025.

Last month, the due date of applications for these important posts was extended until June 10, 2025, although the original last date for application was May 21, 2025.

Through a circular dated April 22, 2025, the DoPT had proposed to fill up the four posts of Under Secretary (Level 11) in the 8th Pay Commission on a deputation basis under the Central Staffing Scheme under the Department of Expenditure.

"It has been decided to extend the last date for submission of application till 30.06.2025," DoPT said in a circular on June 12, 2025.

Earlier on May 22, the DoPT had decided to extend the last date of application from May 21, 2025 to June 10, 2025.

Who can apply for these positions?

According to DoPT's April 2025 circular, officers from the All India Services or any other Organized Group 'A' Services of the Government of India (participating under Central Staffing Scheme) eligible for appointment at Under Secretary level under the Central Staffing Scheme, are eligible for the above posts.

"The period of deputation for the above posts of Under Secretary would coincide with the tenure of the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC), and once the commission outlives its existence, the officers posted their as Under Secretary, may be considered for other vacancies under the Central Staffing Scheme based on functional requirement for the balance period of their respective admissible tenure as provided under the extant guidelines," DoPT says.

The Government may give preference to officers with experience in handling pay matters of the Government of India and those with strong data analysis skills.

Meanwhile, it is expected that the delay in the formation of the 8th Pay Commission may make the new pay panel miss the January 2026 deadline. To avoid speculations and growing unease due to the delay, a pensioners' association has demanded that the Government expedite the process of 8th CPC formation and appointments.
