SUMMARY

Since July 2023, the Bank of Baroda (BoB) has been returning cheques above ₹5 lakh without Positive Pay Confirmation. The limit was cut to ₹4 lakh starting from May 1, 2025, and will be reduced further in phases. This is aimed at strengthening BoB's fraud prevention efforts.

BoB Positive Pay Confirmation, RBI guidelines for banks

BoB first introduced the Positive Pay Confirmation system in January 2021 as per RBI guidelines.

Bank of Baroda (BoB) has announced revised mandatory threshold limits for Positive Pay Confirmation on high-value cheques. The decision is aimed at improving its cheque security and preventing fraud. The bank is implementing a phased reduction in the threshold, which began on May 1.

Bank of Baroda Positive Pay Confirmation threshold limits

Since May 1, 2025, Positive Pay has been mandatory for all Cheque Truncation System (CTS) clearing cheques of ₹4 lakh and above. Previously, the threshold was ₹5 lakh. The next two phases of the reduction will be:

  • ₹3 lakh and above from August 1, 2025
  • ₹2 lakh and above from November 1, 2025

What is Positive Pay Confirmation?

Positive Pay Confirmation is a fraud-prevention system used by banks to verify the cheques presented for payment. Under the system, companies and individuals pre-authorise cheque payments by submitting the required details of the cheque to their banks. Before clearing the cheques, banks verify the information and process it only if everything matches.

What do customers need to do?

Customers need to submit details—account number, cheque number, cheque date, amount, transaction code, and payee name—before issuing cheques to beneficiaries. This will allow banks to verify the information when they get the cheques.

The details can be submitted in many ways, including the BoB World mobile application, net banking, visiting the branch, SMS (to 8422009988), WhatsApp Banking (to 8433 888 777), BoB’s website, and call center (1800 5700).

These details must be confirmed by customers before 6 PM on working days if they wish for the cheques to be processed in the next clearing session.

If all the information on the cheque matches the provided details and the account has sufficient balance, the cheque will be processed. While the bank does not allow modifications in the details once they are submitted, if a customer makes any mistake, they can stop the cheque before it is processed.

Further, cheques older than three months from the confirmation date are not accepted, but future-dated cheques will be processed.

This system by BoB was first introduced in January 2021 as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Starting from July 2023, cheques above ₹5 lakh without Positive Pay Confirmation have been declined and returned.
