Bank fraud cases above ₹1 crore jump to 1,330 in FY26; ₹46,560 crore involved, ₹2,788 crore recovered

The number of bank fraud cases involving more than ₹1 crore rose to 1,330 in FY 2025-26, from 941 cases in FY 2024-25, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cited by the Ministry of Finance in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The information was provided by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in response to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 2621, raised by Vivek K. Tankha.

Vivek K. Tankha asked the Finance Minister:

(a) whether the Ministry could provide the number of bank fraud cases above ₹1 crore reported nationally during the last five years;

(b) the total amount involved in such cases; and

(c) the amount recovered so far.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that, as per RBI data, the details of fraud cases above ₹1 crore reported by Scheduled Commercial Banks, excluding Regional Rural Banks, and All India Financial Institutions (AIFIs) were provided in the annexure.

The data shows that 1,330 fraud cases involving more than ₹1 crore were reported in FY26, with the amount involved at ₹46,559.84 crore. Banks recovered ₹2,788.38 crore during the year.

For comparison, FY25 saw 941 cases involving ₹30,121.98 crore, with ₹1,287.86 crore recovered.

The number of high-value fraud cases had declined for three consecutive years before rising sharply. Cases fell from 1,066 in FY21 to 889 in FY22, 740 in FY23 and 641 in FY24, before increasing to 941 in FY25 and 1,330 in FY26.

The amount involved also declined from ₹97,508.55 crore in FY21 to ₹9,080.50 crore in FY24, before rising to ₹30,121.98 crore in FY25 and ₹46,559.84 crore in FY26.
