For foreign nationals, Aadhaar enrolment or update is allowed only for those who have stayed in India for 182 days or more in the immediately preceding 12 months. The following categories of foreign nationals and corresponding documents are accepted as proof of identity (PoI), proof of address (PoA), and proof of date of birth (PoB):
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card holders must present a valid OCI card along with a valid foreign passport. These documents serve as valid proof of identity and date of birth.
Holders of a Long Term Visa (LTV), issued to minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan (namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians), must submit a valid Long Term Visa (LTV) document. This serves as valid proof of identity and date of birth; in case of updates, it may also be used as proof of address.
Nationals of Nepal and Bhutan can provide a valid Nepalese or Bhutanese passport. In case a passport is not available, they must submit any two of the following documents having the same address:
Valid Nepalese/Bhutanese citizenship certificate,
Valid voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of Nepal/Bhutan, or
Limited validity photo identity certificate issued by the respective mission in India.
These documents are accepted as proof of identity and date of birth.
Other foreign nationals are required to present a valid foreign passport along with a valid Indian visa. These documents are accepted as proof of identity and date of birth.
Additionally, for foreign nationals (excluding OCI, LTV, Nepal, and Bhutan nationals), a valid registration certificate or residential permit issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) is accepted as proof of address.
All documents must be current and valid on the date of application. The Aadhaar issued to foreign nationals will be valid till the expiry of their visa, while for OCI cardholders and nationals of Nepal or Bhutan, the Aadhaar will be valid for ten years. For LTV document holders, Aadhaar will remain valid till the validity of the Long Term Visa document.
Aadhaar for foreign nationals can be done only at Aadhaar adult enrolment centres.
Proof of Address (POA) can be shown using documents acceptable for Indian residents if the person has an Indian address (e.g. rental agreement, utility bill, etc.).
A birth certificate is mandatory for DoB updates for individuals 0–18 years.
Self-declaration and HoF (Head of Family)-based address update options are available only for those residing with family members who have a valid Aadhaar.
