The Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) answered a query on when the Government will release the next tranche of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) for the public. It also shared the reason why no new tranche of SGB has been issued for a long time, and what factor the government will look at before offering it in the future.

According to the ministry, any new offering of SGB will depend on whether it helps in minimising the cost of borrowing or not.

SGB is one of the many financial tools used by the Government of India to raise funds. Some other tools used by the Government for this purpose include Government Securities and Treasury Bills.

The Government decides to mobilise funds based on their relative costs, or the cost of borrowing. Given the elevated prices of the yellow metal now, the cost of borrowing through SGB has increased. Therefore, you are not seeing any new SGB tranches these days.

"The Government of India mobilises resources through various modes, including Government Securities, Treasury Bills, Sovereign Gold Bonds, etc. A decision on the mode of mobilising resources is taken after due consideration of the relative costs to the Government," Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha.

"The recent global geo-political unrest has impacted gold prices significantly, increasing the cost of borrowing through SGBs. The Government's endeavor is to minimize the cost of borrowings, and hence it is imperative for a prudent debt management strategy to carefully consider the above factor while deciding on offering new tranches of Sovereign Gold Bonds," he added.
