The government has decided to keep the SSY account interest rate unchanged at 8.2%.

"The rates of interest on various Small Savings Schemes for the first quarter of FY 2026-27 starting from 1st April, 2026 and ending on 30th June, 2026 shall remain unchanged from those notified for the fourth quarter (1st January, 2026 to 31st March, 2026) of FY 2025-26," the ministry said in a release.

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) account interest rate for the January-March quarter of FY 2025-26 was announced by the Ministry of Finance on December 31, 2025. The government had then also kept the interest rate of SSY unchanged.

SSY is a popular savings scheme for the girl child. Parents open an SSY account in the name of their girl child aged up to 10 years at a post office or in various banks.

SSY interest: Better than FD?

The SSY account is currently offering 8.2% interest per annum, compounded annually. This interest rate is higher than most of the fixed deposit interest rates offered by major banks like State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, and others.

Moreover, there has been no change in the SSY account interest rate since April 1, 2024.

Who can open an SSY account?

According to the Post Office website, an SSY account can be opened by a guardian in the name of a girl who has not yet turned 10 years old as of the date of opening the account. A maximum of two SSY accounts can be opened in the name of two girls in a family.

More than two accounts in a family are allowed in case of twins and triplets after submitting an affidavit. The guardian has to operate the SSY account until the girl child reaches the age of 18. After that, the accountholder can take control of the account by submitting required documents.
