The Reserve Bank of India recently announced the final redemption price of Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017-18 Series 1 due on May 9.

This SGB Series was issued in April 2017 and is now due for final redemption after the completion of 8 years.

How much profit will investors get?

The RBI has set the price for final redemption of SGB 2017-18 Series 1 at ₹9486 per unit.

In a release dated May 2, the central bank said, "he redemption price of SGB shall be based on the simple average of closing price of gold of 999 purity of previous week (Monday to Friday) published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Limited. Accordingly, the redemption price for the final redemption due on May 09, 2025 (May 12, May 11 and May 10 being holidays) shall be ₹9486/- (Rupees Nine Thousand Four Hundred and Eighty-six only) per unit of SGB based on the simple average of closing gold price for the week April 28, 2025 – May 02, 2025. (May 01, 2025 being a holiday)."

In 2017, this SGB series was offered to investors at ₹2951 per unit (1 unit = 1 gram). Further, there was also a discount of ₹50 on online investment in this SGB series in 2017. So, investors who invested in this SGB series online in 2017 paid ₹2901 per gram.

Calculation shows that investors who purchased the SGB 2017-18 Series 1 online in 2017 will book a profit of 227% on redemption, while offline investors will book a 221% profit on final redemption.

The Government is currently not issuing new SGBs. However, the redemption of old SGB units is being facilitated by the RBI after their respective maturity or pre-maturity redemption dates.
