But before you pick up that shiny coin or silver bowl, take a moment to check: is it really pure silver? That’s where silver hallmarking steps in. It’s the official stamp of purity, your assurance that what you’re buying is exactly what it claims to be.

What is hallmarking?

Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles.

A hallmark provides important details, such as the purity of the silver, the maker's name, the testing location, and sometimes even the year it was made. Understanding these marks helps you shop with confidence and avoid fakes or low-quality pieces.

The government has introduced voluntary hallmarking for silver jewellery and articles, effective September 1. The revised standard introduces seven purity grades are 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990, and 999.
