If you own Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) and are considering an early exit, July could be an important month to mark on your calendar.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) premature redemption schedule for eligible SGB tranches, eight redemption dates are falling in July 2026. Investors who have completed the mandatory five-year holding period can opt for early redemption instead of waiting until the bonds mature after eight years.

Who can redeem their SGBs early?

Sovereign Gold Bonds come with an eight-year maturity. However, investors are allowed to exit after completing five years from the date of issue. The option can be exercised only on the interest payment dates specified by the RBI.

If your SGB series appears in the July calendar, you can apply for premature redemption by approaching the bank, post office, stock holding agent, depository participant or the RBI Retail Direct platform through which you purchased the bonds.

Don't miss the request window

One of the most important things investors should remember is that the request must be submitted before the redemption date.

How is the redemption price decided?

The amount you receive on redemption is not based on the issue price of your bond. Instead, the RBI calculates the redemption value using the simple average of the closing price of 999 purity gold over the previous three business days, based on rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).

As gold prices fluctuate, the redemption amount may be higher or lower than your original investment.
