The official schedule for the US Fed’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) indicates that the central bank will start its policy meeting on Tuesday, October 27, and conclude on Wednesday, October 28.

After concluding the meeting, the FOMC will release the outcome of the meeting through an official press release at 2:00 pm (ET).

In the September policy outcome, the US Fed unanimously decided to raise its rates by 25 basis points (bps) for the first time in over three years to the range of 3.75% to 4% citing solid expansion pace of economic activity amid inflation risk in the country.

Earlier, the Fed officials have indicated that the central bank is in no rush to move the interest rates again before the committee decides the correct trajectory for the same, even though higher global energy prices adds pressure to households.

Will US Fed keep rates on hold?

CME Group’s FedWatch tool indicates that the market experts predict there is a 90.6% probability of the US Federal Reserve keeping their key interest rates unchanged or on hold at the range of 3.75% to 4% in the upcoming meeting outcome.

However, the data also suggests that there is a 9.4% probability for the Federal Reserve to increase the key interest rates by 25 basis points to the range of 4% to 4.25% in the upcoming outcome schedule to be published on Wednesday.

Investors are focused on a potential rate pause rather than a back-to-back rate hike to tighten situation in the American economy.

This potential rate hold is expected to come at a time when the CPI inflation for the US economy surged to 3.7% as of September 2026, in comparison to 3.4% in the month of August 2026.

The 3.7% inflation rate remains elevated, well above the central bank’s target of 2% as the US Fed aims to contain the increase and cater to the labour market amid crude oil prices rallying in the global market.

Unemployment rate rises to 4.2%

In September 2026, the unemployment rate in the country surged to 4.2%, from earlier 4.1% levels in the 12-month period ended August 2026, according to the official Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data.

Although the unemployment rate increased in the period, non-farm payroll jobs increased by 29,000, with growth in sectors like healthcare services and hospitals, while other segments like nursing and residential care lost employment.

Reports suggest that US job growth was slower than expected, ruling out bets of a potential rate hike from the US Federal Reserve. The central bank has two major mandates: containing inflation and aiding the job market.

With jobs slowing down, elevated inflation, and upcoming US mid-term elections, the central bank will keep a close watch on the economic data to determine the trajectory of interest rates for the economy.

US Fed’s goal

Although the central bank cited strong economic activity in the economy, the Fed remains concerned about the elevated uncertainty in the market due to geopolitical developments.

“Inflation remains elevated. Today's policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee's 2% goal. The Committee will deliver price stability,” the FOMC said in its September policy outcome.

With the sticky inflation situation in the American economy, the US Fed’s goal is now looking clear to balance out the rising cost of energy sources and the higher cost of imports weighing on the economy.
