Trade setup for Dec 16: Will NIFTY50 close with gains on expiry day?

GIFT NIFTY futures indicate a gap-down opening for NIFTY50 on Tuesday morning owing to weak global cues. On the other hand, options data indicate a narrow trade range for NIFTY50 on expiry day at 25,900 to 26,200.

NIFTY50 showed strong resilience against the global pressures on Monday and recouped the majority of the opening losses. Stable wholesale inflation reading for October boosted investor sentiment. The US markets continued to slide further on Monday as key indices failed to hold the gains. The NASDAQ closed 0.5% lower, while the Dow Jones and S&P 500 ended on a flat note.

On the technical charts, the index maintained the momentum by closing above the 20-EMA level of 25,966 on Monday. Experts believe the index would continue to consolidate further on expiry day amid mixed global cues.

On the options data front, the 26,200 calls hold the highest open interest, indicating a strong resistance for today’s expiry. Similarly, 25,900 puts hold the highest open interest, indicating near-term support and a narrow range of expiry trade on Tuesday.

Expiry outlook

Bullish outlook: Traders with bullish sentiment can execute a long call strategy by buying 26,000 calls. The strategy would turn profitable after the index moves above 26,071.
Bearish outlook: Traders with a bearish outlook can execute a long put strategy by buying a put strike of 26,100. The strategy would turn profitable after the index moves below the 25,996 level.
