Stock market today: It was literally a roller coaster ride for stocks on Dalal Street on Friday, December 13. The equity benchmark indices, which once nosedived over 1.4% in the morning trade, made a stellar comeback later only to settle 1% higher. 

With today's rally, both SENSEX and NIFTY turned positive for the week. The 50-share index of the NSE gained about 0.4% while BSE SENSEX rose 0.5%. 

Investor sentiment got a boost as November CPI inflation moderated to 5.48%, down from 6.21% in October, according to the government data released on Thursday. The inflation rate for rural areas was recorded at 5.95%, while urban areas saw a lower rate of 4.83% in November.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 82,133.12, up 843.16 points, or 1.04%. The NSE's NIFTY50 index settled at 24,768.30, up 219.60 points, or 0.89%. 

India VIX, the volatility index, ended at 13.05 levels, down 1.04%.

Top gainers and losers on NIFTY50 index

Out of 50 constituents of the NIFTY50 index, 41 advanced while nine declined. 

The top five gainers on the index were Bharti Airtel, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HUL, and UltraTech Cement
The top losers were Shriram Finance, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel, and Hindalco

Buzzing Stocks

Bajel Projects: Shares of Bajel Projects rallied 20% to hit a high of ₹293.90 apiece on the NSE as the company informed exchanges that it had been awarded a supply of goods and services contract by M/s Solapur Transmission Limited (Project SPV Company of Torrent Power Ltd).
Bharti Airtel: Shares of Bharti Airtel ended 4.44% higher at ₹1,682 apiece on the BSE. In November, Bharti Airtel's promoter, Bharti Telecom, purchased around 1.2% of the shares of the company from the Bharti family's investment firm, Indian Continent Investment Limited.
Zomato: Zomato shares ended over 1% higher at ₹288.20 apiece on the BSE despite the company receiving the tax notice. 

The food delivery aggregator on Thursday said the GST department in Thane has imposed a tax demand of ₹803.4 crore, including interest and penalty. The demand order has been received in respect of non-payment of GST on delivery charges with interest and penalty thereon, Zomato said in a regulatory filing.

The company said it will file an appeal before the appropriate authority as it believes it has a strong case.

Broader Market

The BSE MidCap index ended at 47,776.62, down 39.26 points, or 0.08%, while the BSE SmallCap index settled at 56,957.46, down 167.68 points, or 0.29%. 

Sector Watch

Telecom, FMCG, and consumer durable stocks were the top sectoral gainers. 

The BSE Telecommunication index ended at 3,021.85, up 2.13%. 

On the contrary, metal stocks slipped the most. 

The BSE METAL index ended at 31,741.18, down 0.76%. 

Market Statistics

Out of 4,105 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,173 declined and 1,818 advanced, while 114 scrips remained unchanged. 

As many as 227 stocks hit their 52-week high while 35 stocks touched their 52-week low levels on the BSE. 

Further, 339 stocks hit their upper circuits while 239 stocks hit their lower circuit bands.
