Broader market indices like NIFTY Midcap100 (-1.3%) and NIFTY Smallcap100 (-0.9%) are also trading lower. More than 105 stocks hit their 52-week low today as investors turn cautious amid escalation in the US-Iran war and surge in global oil prices.

Why are NIFTY50 and SENSEX down today?

  • Escalation in US-Iran war: US and Iran war has witnessed renewed escalation in the last few days. US and Iran exchanged strikes on Tuesday with US forces did multiple strikes on Iran’s air defense sites, radar systems, and naval assets on Tuesday.

As per Iran media the country retaliated by attacking multiple US-linked targets in Iraq, Jordan, and Bahrain. The latest military attack between the two countries marks the worst military tensions since late-July, as the two remained at loggerheads over the Strait of Hormuz.

Further escalation in the US-Iran conflict is likely to impact the oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, Brent Crude Oil prices surged for the third straight day to $96 per barrel.

Rising oil prices impact the Indian economy as India imports nearly 90% of its domestic crude consumption. Oil-sensitive stocks like Asian Paints, InterGlobe Aviation, BPCL, HPCL, Apollo Tyres, CEAT Limited and others are down over 2%.

  • Rising US bond yield: The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note stood at around 4.8% on Wednesday, moving toward its highest level since October 2023. Surge in oil prices intensified inflation concerns and reinforced expectations for an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate hike.

Higher risk-free return on US government bonds is likely to be negative for emerging markets like India as global investors could move their funds and exposure to less riskier US bonds and leading to foreign fund outflow from Indian equities.
