SENSEX, NIFTY50 close at five-month highs as drop in crude boosts sentiment

The Indian equity benchmarks rose for a fourth straight session on Monday, August 3, and closed at their highest levels in five months as investor sentiment got a boost from drop in crude prices as geopolitical tensions eased in West Asia.

The SENSEX rose as much as 800 points and NIFTY50 index closed at an intraday high of 24,774 led by gains in index heavyweights like Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Toubro, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Eternal and ITC.

The SENSEX ended 0.7% or 544 points higher at 78,639 and NIFTY50 index advanced 1.6% or 391 points to close at 24,774.

Monday's trading session was the first in which markets closed under the Closing Auction Session (CAS) mechanism.

Investor sentiment got a boost after Brent crude fell as much as 7% to $81.93 per barrel tracking easing of geopolitical tensions in West Asia after Trump said that he had agreed to halt strikes on Iran following requests from West Asian allies to give diplomacy a chance.

Buying was visible across board as all the 15 major sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ended higher led by the NIFTY IT index's over 3% gain. NIFTY Bank, Financial Services, Auto, FMCG, Metal, PSU Bank, Private Bank, Realty and Consumer Durables indices also rose between 1.3% and 1,76%.

Broader markets also witnessed buying interest as NIFTY Midcap 100 index advanced 1.2% and NIFTY Smallcap 100 index rose 1.3%.

Among the individual shares, Urban Company shares rose as much as 18% to hit an intraday high of ₹152 after the company reported that its loss narrowed to ₹92 crore in June quarter from ₹161 crore in the previous quarter.

Urban Company added that InstaHelp, its quick-service housekeeping vertical, crossed 1,00,000 delivered orders in a single day on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Blue Dart surged as much as 10% to touch an intraday high of ₹5,694.85 after its net profit in April-June period rose 85% to ₹87 crore from ₹47 crore a year earlier.

The company's net sales advanced 15% to ₹1,568 crore as against ₹1,442 crore in the same period last year.

Grasim was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose 5.13% to close at ₹3,260.

TCS, IndiGo, Infosys, Shriram Finance, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors PV and Dr Reddy's Labs also rose between 2.78% and 4.57%.

On the flip side, Apollo Hospitals, Sun Pharma, Maruti Suzuki, ONGC, Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel were notable laggards in the NIFTY50 index.

The overall market breadth was positive as 2,360 shares ended higher while 1,027 closed lower on the NSE.
