Here is what worked well for Ather Energy this year

Market share gains

Electric two-wheeler space is one of the fastest growing sub-segment in the automobile industry. Over the past five years, the electric two-wheeler sales have increased from 1.5 lakhs to over 1 million units. Over the years, the dynamics of the electric two-wheeler market have changed rapidly. The new entrants like Ola Electric earlier dominated the space, but the traditional two-wheeler manufacturers slowly regained the share back. As Ola electric struggled with operational headwinds, Ather Energy managed to sustain and grow its market share outbeating its closest peer.

Ather Energy sold ~30000 units in September 2026 and held 14.7% market share in the crowded electric two-wheeler space. However, as of Q1FY27, Ather Energy kept the market share intact throughout last one year at ~17%. The traditional auto players like TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto managed to gain larger share, but Ather energy remained consistent at the third spot.

Operational efficiency over growth

At the primary level, it may look Ather Energy has felt short in gaining market share despite superior and premium products. Market share gains remains a costly affair, expanding networks, marketing and other spends. But Ather Energy chose to focus on operational efficiency first as it gives enough thrust to fund Future growth. Ather Energy improved substantially over the past few years. Company narrowed down the operating loss from ₹283 crore in FY24 to ₹69 crore in FY26 and finally turned profitable in the Q2 of FY27 at ₹11 crore.

This was largely achieved by consistent high double digit growth in sales of more than ~50% YoY for six consecutive quarters. At the same time, the company managed to bring down the material costs down from over 83% in Q2FY25 to ~79% in Q2FY27. Similarly, the employee benefit expenses also came down from 19% in Q2FY25 to ~8% in Q2FY27.The efficient cost management led Ather energy to drive profitability first before growth.

Capacity expansion

For a rapidly growing electric two-wheeler space, Ather Energy announced major capacity expansion to service the rising demand. The company’s current installed capacity at its hosur plant is 4.2 lakh units per annum, which currently runs at 98%, maxing the entire capacity. Besides this, the company has planned expansion to hit 1.14 million units capacity by FY28. The new plant under construction at Chatrapati Sambhajinagar will produce 6.5 lakh units and aim to add another 75,000 units capacity at the Hosur plant.
