When is Diwali Muhurat Trading 2025? Date, timings and what you should know

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will conduct a special Diwali Muhurat Trading session for 2025 on Tuesday, October 21. The annual special session is held to mark the beginning of a new financial year as per the Hindu calendar.

According to circulars issued on September 22, the one-hour special session will be held between 1:45 pm and 2:45 pm, with the trade modification window closing at 2:55 pm.

What is Samvat 2082?

Samvat 2082 refers to the Hindu New Year. Vikram Samvat 2082, which began on March 30, 2025 marks the start of the new year in the Hindu lunisolar calendar and is celebrated as Hindu Nav Varsha.

The day is considered highly auspicious as it is believed to be the moment when Lord Brahma initiated the creation of the universe, making it a symbolically important beginning. The festival also represents renewal and prosperity, symbolising new beginnings, hope and good fortune for the coming year.

Why is Muhurat trading considered to be auspicious?

Muhurat Trading is a symbolic and auspicious one-hour session conducted every year on Diwali. It represents the beginning of a new financial year, according to the Hindu calendar.

Traditionally, the session is held in the evening; however, this year it will take place in the afternoon.

The term “Muhurat” refers to an auspicious period chosen to start something new. During this time, trading is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune.

“All trades executed in this Diwali Muhurat trading session shall result in settlement obligations,” National Stock Exchange of India Limited said in its circular.

History of Muhurat Trading

In last year’s Muhurat Trading session, the BSE Sensex gained 354.77 points (0.55%), closing at 65,259.45, with 28 out of 30 stocks on the index finishing higher in the first trading session of Samvat 2081.

The NIFTY50 rose 100.20 points (0.52%) to end at 19,525.55, supported by gains in the IT, infrastructure, and energy sectors, with 43 of the 50 stocks on the index closing in green.
