‘Muhurat’ means an auspicious time to begin an important activity to ensure success.

This year, Muhurat trading will be conducted between 1:45 and 2:45 pm on Tuesday, October 21. It is believed that this session will set the tone for Samvat 2082.

What is Vikram Samvat 2082?

Vikram Samvat is a Hindu lunisolar calendar that follows the moon’s phases for its months and the sun’s cycle for its years.

In the Vikram Samvat, or the Vikrami calendar, a year has 354 days and uses lunar months and solar sidereal years to track time, with an extra month being added approximately every three years to keep the calendar aligned with the solar cycle.

The calendar features 12 or 13 lunar months, with each month divided into two phases with 15 days each: the Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. The former begins with the new moon and ends with the full moon. On the other hand, the latter commences with a full moon and ends with a new moon.

While the calendar is 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, Vikram Samvat’s months correspond to the 12 months of the latter.

It is also the official calendar for Nepal and is used for religious and cultural purposes in several parts of India, particularly in the north, west, and central regions.

Two Samvat systems

Vikram Samvat is different from Saka Samvat, which is the official calendar of India, along with the Gregorian calendar.

The Saka Samvat is a solar calendar and uses a 365-day solar year, similar to the Gregorian calendar.

While the Vikrami calendar is estimated to have been established in 57 BC, the Saka Samvat began in 78 AD and is 78 years behind the Gregorian calendar.

In 2025, Vikram Samvat began on March 30, while the Saka Samvat started on March 22. The current Saka Samvat year is 1947.

Why will Samvat 2082 be celebrated during Diwali 2025?

While Samvat 2082 began on March 30, people associate the year with festivals such as Diwali, which is widely considered a perfect time for new beginnings and investments in India.

When people mention that Samvat begins with Diwali, they often refer to the new financial year or the new investment cycle that many choose to start during this auspicious time.

The Samvat is often thought of as a new financial year, which many investors choose to begin in Diwali with Muhurat trading. This is also why investors consider Muhurat trading to be such a tone-setting event.

The Indian market traded in negative territory during the first half of the previous Samvat, with the hopes of recovery being dampened in the second half due to the unforeseen trade tensions caused by Trump tariffs and the trade strain on India-US relations.
