After Livemint, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) received an informal note from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) proposing multiple relief options for the debt-ridden telecom company (Vi), the firm's shares rallied 10% in the intraday trade on Friday. The stock's two-day gains stand at 16%.

Vodafone Idea's AGR payment

Vodafone Idea owes nearly ₹83,400 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR), and the annual payments currently stand at ₹18,000 crore, scheduled from March 2026. When combined with interest and penalties, Vi's dues stand at more than ₹2 lakh crore.

As per experts, a collapse of Vi could result in a two-player telecom market in India dominated by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

As per the report, one of the relief options is an additional two-year pause on paying the statutory dues under moratorium at present. The DoT has proposed to give the company extra time to pay its dues, along with smaller annual payouts and a waiver on penalties and interest penalties on AGR payment, the report said.

Negotiations with lenders remain stalled due to uncertainty over adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, outgoing CEO Akshaya Moondra said during the June quarter earnings call on August 18.

Debt-ridden Vodafone Idea is now looking to raise money from non-bank sources, as banks remain cautious of lending.

Vodafone Idea Q1 Results and share performance

For the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Vodafone Idea reported a widened net loss of ₹6,808 crore against a net loss of ₹6,432 crore posted in the year-ago period.

On a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis, the net loss narrowed from ₹7,166 crore posted in Q4 FY25.

The firm's revenue from operations increased 5% year-on-year to ₹11,022 crore as compared to ₹10,508 crore in Q1 FY25.

Shares of Vi have jumped 13.5% in the last five days, while the stock has soared 2.7% over the past month.

In the last six months, however, the scrip has fallen 6.45%, and the year-to-date fall stands at 7.62%. The company's market capitalisation stands at ₹80,173.85 crore.
