Shares of Vodafone Idea Ltd, India’s third largest mobile telephone company, dropped over 2% in early trade on Tuesday, February 11, ahead of the announcement of the company’s earnings for the quarter ended December 2024 (Q3FY25).

Vodafone Idea shares fell as much as 2.4% to hit the day’s low of ₹8.9 apiece on Tuesday on the National Stock Exchange of India. The stock has fallen over 7.5% in the past five trading sessions, but is still up 15.5% in the last one month. Over the past one year, the share price has declined over 38%.

Experts are predicting Vodafone Idea to see wider losses in Q3FY25 compared with the year-ago period. However, revenue is expected to inch up on the back of an increase in average revenue per user (ARPU) after the company undertook 10-24% tariff hikes in July 2024 across all plans.

The management’s commentary on the progress of 5G rollout along with updates on the telco’s declining subscriber count would also be in focus.

In the previous quarter ended September 2024 (Q2FY25), Vodafone Idea’s net losses widened to ₹7,175.9 crore from ₹6,432.1 crore in Q1FY25. Compared to the year-ago period, losses narrowed from ₹8,737 in Q2FY24.

Revenue from operations had increased 2% sequentially to ₹10,932.3 crore and was up 4% year-on-year.

Customer ARPU had improved to ₹166 in Q2FY25 compared to ₹154 in Q1FY25 due to the tariff hike. Mobile ARPU had increased to ₹156 in the September quarter from ₹142 a year ago and ₹146 in the previous quarter.

Last month, a media report said that leading telcos, including Vodafone Idea, may raise tariffs again this year by around 10% in order to minimise losses.

Companies may also introduce 5G-specific pricing along with the tariff hike as they focus on monetisation, the report added.

Vodafone Idea shares were trading 1.65% lower at ₹8.96 apiece on the NSE at 10.58 am.
