Punjab National Bank (PNB), the country's leading state-run lender, on Tuesday, May 5, said that it earned a net profit of ₹5,225 crore in January-March quarter, marking an increase of 14% from ₹4,567 crore in the same period last year.

For financial year 2025-26, PNB's net profit rose 3.7% to ₹16,904 crore.

The bank's provisions for bad loans jumped sharply by 54% to ₹906 crore at the end of fourth quarter of financial year 2025-26 compared with ₹588 crore a year earlier.

The Delhi-based lender's net interest income or the difference between interest earned on loans and expended on deposits declined 3.5% to ₹10,380 crore from ₹10,756 crore in the same period last year.

PNB's asset quality showed an improvement as its gross non-performing assets (NPAs), as a percentage of total advances, came in at 2.95% as against 3.95% in the year-ago period.

In absolute terms, gross NPAs came in at ₹37,124 crore compared with ₹44,082 crore.

The bank's total retail credit increased by 8.3% to ₹2,80,779 crore at the end of financial year 2025-26. Within retail credit, housing loan segment rose by 11.6% year on year (Y-o-Y) to ₹1,29,832 crore, vehicle loan posted a growth of 35.1% Y-o-Y to reach ₹35,199 crore, agriculture advances grew by 10.7% on Y-o-Y basis to ₹1,99,919 crore and MSME advances increased Y-o-Y by 19.9% to ₹1,95,027 crore.

"As on 31st March 2026, the Bank has 10,324 domestic branches and 2 International Branches. Out of total number of branches, bank has 63.4% branches in rural and semi-urban areas," PNB said.

PNB shares traded 1% lower at ₹107.55 after its earnings announcement.
