Domestic gold and silver prices rose reacting to surge in international prices. In the US markets, spot Gold prices were trading 1.5% or $71 higher at $4,667 an ounce. Meanwhile, Silver also traded higher in the international markets, up 5.2% at $93.1 per ounce.

Gold and silver prices surged after President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would impose new tariffs on eight European nations that have opposed his plan for the United States to acquire Greenland. This lead investors to look for safe-haven assets leading to higher demand for the precious metals.

Donald Trump said the US would levy a 10% tariff on goods from the affected countries starting Feb. 1, with the rate set to rise to 25% in June if no agreement is reached. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, along with several Nordic and northern European states are among affected countries.

The latest tariff threat added to an already supportive backdrop for the precious metals. Last week, Gold and Silver rose amid rising geopolitical concerns in Iran, expectations of futher rate cuts by Federal Reserve and weak US dollar.
